This workshop arises from the need to bring multidisciplinary perspectives and tools to the law in order to analyze legal discourse as it contributes to the construction of socio-cultural dynamics. 

Aimed at professionals in the field of law such as lawyers, judges, parliamentary advisors, human rights collectives, anthropologists, sociologists, psychologists, political scientists, journalists, linguists or any social science professional whose activities are related to the application and interpretation of legal norms or the analysis of legal frameworks.

The objective of this course is to provide an understanding of the usefulness of language and discursive analysis for a better understanding of law and its social practices.

We reflect on the following questions:

  • What is the importance of language in the field of law?

  • Is Law a discourse? Does Law construct social realities?

  • How can Discourse Studies help us in legal practice



Adriana Bolívar: Linguist and critical discourse analyst, founder of the Latin American Association of Discourse Studies (ALED).

Tania Campos Thomas: Anthropologist and playwright specialized in qualitative methodologies.

Carolina Rea: Lawyer and researcher in Critical Discourse Analysis.


Juan Antonio Rodríguez: Retired judge, jurist and law professor.


  • Introduction by Teun van Dijk, founder and direcctor of the Center of discourse studies

  • Adriana Bolívar: The importance of language: what role do words, language and discourse play? Why and for what purpose discourse analysis in the social sciences and in law?

  • Tania Campos Thomas: Law as a discourse that constructs social realities: is law a discourse, how does law construct social reality?

  • Carolina Rea and Juan Antonio Rodríguez: Discourse and Law: What and what for? The new practices.
